Maria Mitchell from Nantucket Island in Massachusetts was an amateur
astronomer and comet finder in the mid-1800s. She was the first woman
astronomer in the United States. Never a profit in your own home,
Maria (pronounced "Mahr(long "i")'ah") was given a medal from the
monarchy of Denmark in recognition of her accomplishments. She was
also the first female professor of astronomy at Vassar College.
