Old Pueblo Archaeology Center is pleased to announce the following
upcoming activities:

FREE PRESENTATION THIS MONTH

Thursday July 16, 2009
Old Pueblo Archaeology Center’s “Third Thursdays” free presentation:
“Tree-Rings, Hunting, and Migrants: The Evidence from Whiptail Ruin” with
archaeologist Linda Gregonis at Old Pueblo Archaeology Center, 2201 W.
44th Street, Tucson (in Tucson Unified School District’s Ajo Service
Center, just west of La Cholla Blvd., ½-mile north of John F. Kennedy
Park).
	7:30 to 9 p.m. Free.
Sometime in the early A.D. 1200s a few families from the Tucson Basin,
along with some of their migrant relatives from the San Pedro Valley,
established a village at hot springs near the base of the Santa Catalina
Mountains in the northeastern Tucson Basin. There they built
rock-reinforced adobe houses in the style of the times. Seven hundred
years later archaeologists discovered the village and named it Whiptail
Ruin. Excavations at the site suggest that at least some of its residents
were Puebloan people who had migrated from northern Arizona into the San
Pedro Valley east of Tucson, and that the Whiptail site villagers
specialized in hunting large animals. In this talk Linda Gregonis
discusses archaeological evidence from the site and describes the
challenges of working with archaelogical excavation field notes that are
nearly 40 years old.
