Hi everyone, Uzi Bram and I are organizing a Florida-centered session: Cosmopolitanism and Ethnogenesis, Colonialism and Resistance: Florida in Global Perspective.

The draft abstract for the session: Juan Ponce de León landed on the peninsula for Spain in 1513 and over the centuries Florida was ruled under five flags. Each occupation has brought change to the peninsular as new groups of people have migrated on to the land to make their mark and leave their past for our future. Archaeological work within the state has shown how at times Florida has been inhabited by groups that have been part of a greater identity or idea and in other times the refuge for groups trying to escape incorporation or extinction by global forces. By juxtaposing archaeological sites and material pasts from across the peninsula, this session will highlight common themes and diverse histories for Florida as center and periphery within a global context.

Currently we have nine participants but are open to additional papers for our session. If interested in contributing to the session please email either Uzi Baram at [log in to unmask] or Dan Hughes at [log in to unmask]

Thanks

Dan
