Westover and Shirley plantations in Charles City County, VA both have
(Westover) and had (Shirley) separate M&F privies. Westover's privies
had receptacles evidently similar to Monticello for waste. Westover's
were out the back door to the yard fence and ladies to the right,
gents to the left. Shirley's are long gone (the 1931 plans show them,
but don't ID gender). Shirley had indoor potties as the privies were
not only at the end of the garden but at the back corner of each. I
think they are unexcavated, but Ted Reinhart's excellent publication
on the Archaeology of Shirley Plantation has a detailed history that
may include them. (I'm away from my library and can't check just now).
