Good Morning all!

My name is Jon Van Beckum and I am doing some background research for a
future ground penetrating radar (GPR) study at Fort Crawford later this
fall. Fort Crawford (47CR249) is located in Prairie du Chien, WI and was
occupied from 1816-1832.

The purpose of this GPR study is to better define the layout of the fort
(1/2 the fort is buried), especially the location of the privies, the
powder magazine, the flag pole, and (if time) attempt to locate other
features outside the fort (cemetery).

Previous archaeological excavation was done at the post by the WPA in the
1930's, in which they excavated and identified the foundations of the
fort. There are artifacts from that dig and very limited field notes,
but the data that pertains to the fort's layout and an excavation report
is lost. In addition, I have contacted the National Archives, and they
could not locate a military blueprint for Ft. Crawford.

I was hoping to use other post layouts as a reference. But, I am having
problems finding research and excavation reports from other military forts
(of this same time frame) that show the fort's layout, where the privies
and cemeteries were located- in relation to the post, and how the
buildings were utilized.

I have read the report on Ft. Atkinson (Carson 1979) in which the author
stated that their excavations located the privies mainly inside and
outside the corners of the post that were opposite of the bastions. But
that is all that I have been able to locate at this point.

I would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction
to a report from a fort, from this same time frame, that I could use as a
guide when we do our GPR study later this fall. PDF's of the report(s)
would be greatly appreciated since I am out of grad school and do not have
the inter-library loan privileges that I use to have. If needed, I would
be happy to send a check for postage and shipping.

Thank you very much for your time!

Sincerely,

Jon Van Beckum
