Re: Film Restoration/Preservation
I think this can have relevance to this listserv. We have a series of
pre-VHS pre-BETA video tape of excavations done at Mission Concepción in
the early 80s. The information would be invaluable to further work we have
done there. I sent them to be converted to DVD and the company could not
do it because the films were too deteriorated. Therefore, valuable
historical archeological information has been lost because care was not
taken in advance to transfer the film to a more stable medium. If anyone
knows of any new techniques for lifting images off of old magnetic tape we
would love to try again. Of 90+ tapes containing preservation actions in
progress, excavations, interviews with those involved in the WPA work at
Mission San José etc., we were only able to get information off of five of
them.
