There seems to be a lot of great bargain buys in cm these days. More
every time I go into a record store. I think this due to the upstart Naxos
label. Lebrecht say that every 1 in 5 classical discs bought today is a
Naxos. With the new competition, the traditional big classical labels like
Decca, DG, EMI and Sony have started re-issueing their back catalogues at
low prices and have introduced series' aimed at people just starting to get
into the music e.g. EMI's Red Line and Classics, DG Classikon, Originals
and twofer's, Decca Doubles and Classics and Sony Essential classics. This
is great for music fans, sometimes capitalism acts like its supposed to.
The Ricardo Castro complete Chopin Nocturnes on Arte Nova are a great buy,
so is the Fou T'Song Nocturnes and Mazurkas on Essential classics. These
artists may not play with the sensitivity of a Rubinstein or the fire of
Horowitz but their playing is high quality. DG Classikon has issued the
popular Beethoven sonatas by Gilels, the late sonatas by Charles Rosen are
on Essential Classics. DG classikon has a CD that I really like of the
best known pieces by Berg with the BPO inder Karajan and Kubelik and the
violin concerto played by Szernyg. These CD's are all under C$8. More
great bargains under $10 Mahler 4 Szell CSo Essential Classics Tchaikovsky
5,6 Mravinsky; 2,4 Abbado NPO Tchaikovsky p.c #1 with Argerich and v.c.
with Milstein Chopin Etudes Gavrilov Dvorak Quartet 12, Quintet op81
Juillard Q w/Firkusny Dvorak Trios Mozart Concerti 21,26 Casadesus w/Szell
Scriabin Etudes, A. Paley, Naxos. Rachmaninov Sym 1-3 Ormandy (2CD)
Well, enough for now.
