ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

We are planning the Children's Library Discovery Center, a new wing of
the Central Library in Queens, NY, scheduled to open at the end of 2009.

A major graphic element of the center will be a large (30' at max width)
map of queens imbedded in the entry floor. Sounds will be associated
with a few of the map icons. Our fabricators are recommending
Poly-Planar MA3013W White 3" 60 Watt (pair) Waterproof Marine Speakers,
rather than ceiling mounted directional speakers. Their reasoning is, at
least in part, that the sound will be more directly associated with the
icon on the floor than if the sound comes from above, regardless of how
targeted the sound.

Speaker details: http://www.rocktheboataudio.com/html/32291.html
These speakers are designed to fit in tight places. They will give you
good sound, (especially high frequencies) but don't expect thumping bass
from a speaker this size.

3" Cone
60 Watts Peak power handling each speaker Low Magnetic Field Won't
affect instruments Waterproof construction throughout Powder coated
aluminum grill Mounting hardware and speaker wire included Quick Connect
terminals Cutout dimensions: 3" diameter Overall Grill size 3 1/2"
diameter
1 year manufacturers warranty

These will be inserted into the flooring, covered by a grate flush with
the floor surface.

Does anyone have experience with speakers in the floor?

Thank you in advance for your comments.
