I never thought that fellow list members would bring the old
"testosterone" argument out of the closet. It's nothing but an excuse to
bypass the fact that women have been greatly "shut out" by men in certain
fields; it also does not help that many women put up with and even support
the discrimination. This is the case with the profession of priests in the
Catholic Church hierarcy.
Fortunately, female conductors are moving up. There's an increasing number
of female music directors of symphony orchestras as well as increased
penetration of the larger markets.
I consider the notion that females do not possess sufficient "testosterone"
to do well as conductors to be based on a combination of stupidity and
fear. Real men don't think this way; they welcome the additional
challenges from increased competition.
