Yes. . . Very insightful post! And yes, there will be several distractors,
nevertheless, here are some other great Szell recordings:
In the same Masterworks Heritage series, you should procure the recent
reissue of the Brahms Piano Concertos with Leon Fleisher. Of course,
any or all of Szell's recordings of Haydn, but especially his "Oxford"
symphony, #92. Beethoven's Piano Concertos, again with Fleisher as
soloist. Mozart's "Haffner" symphony, Piano Concerto # 24 with Rob't
Casadesus, and the Clarinet Concerto with Rob't Marcellus. Schubert's
9th. Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream with the Concertgebouw and
Mendelssohn's "Italian" with his Clevelanders. Brahm's 3rd symphony.
Schumann's "Rhenish." Mahler's 4th. Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An
Exhibition." Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. Sibelius 2nd with the
Concertgebouw. Finally, Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Don
Quixote, with Pierre Fournier as soloist, and Death & Transfiguration.
Any additions? Subtractions?
