Actually I thought it was quite clever and effective the way one of my
theory professors (IU's Gary Wittlich) used Webern's arrangement of Bach's
Ricercar to move a somewhat resistant class toward Webern. Much as I love
"Somerwind" I don't think it is of any use for teaching the 20th-century
theory that was at issue. It does help give a more rounded portrait of a
composer from an early period to which he (unlike Schoenberg) never looked
back. So say I as I am trying to prepare a good score of a symphony I
composed 20 years ago.
