Dear Friends:
Alcohol guidelines for a lactating mother seem to me to be value based,
rather than evidence based.
There is only one case report where a baby showed untoward effects from
maternal alcohol ingestion: that is Binkiewicz et al (J Peds Vol 93 Number 6,
December 1, 1978). The baby presented with symptoms of Cushing Syndrome; the
mother was drinking "at least 50 12-ounce cans of beer a week plus generous
amounts of other more concentrated alcoholic drinks". The symptoms went away when
the mother stopped the alcohol.
Ruth Little MD was unable to replicate her results showing that a drink a
day had a 1-point difference on one of the Bayley scales. Her first study went
up to 12 month old babies; her second went out to 18 months.
Is there any evidence from anywhere in the world that shows a link between
maternal alcohol ingestion and infant symptoms?
warmly,
