I mentioned this in my message in the Civil War discussion as a footnote but just in case anyone missed it -

LEWIS R. BINFORD (November 21, 1930 - April 11, 2011) passed away on Monday. He was, in my opinion, the most important thinker in archaeology between 1950 and 2011 and did more to change the discipline than what happened before 1965 or after 1980. It is not necessary to agree with his views to recognize his impact and contributions.

Again, I do not have the source at hand but there is an excellent interview with Binford by Mel Thurman in HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY centered on his involvement with our field.
