The Baltimore Center for Urban Archaeology undertook excavation on a wharf or quay in the harbor some years ago - you might want to pursue that, but I am not sure where and if it was published. It might be worth checking with the Maryland Historical Trust.

some comparisons and Australia seems the obvious place but the   
publisher wants a short book and tight focus. We may try to sneak in
