Nan,
I missed your first request for information. Other than the work Donna
Seifert and I have published on DC, which you are probably aware of, that
dealt variously with class, gender, and ethnicity, and the work in Boston in
published in HA, which has some articles on the infrastructure associated
with wharves and made-land, we have done another project in DC whose main
result was documenting the urban infrastructure work done by Boss Shepherd
after the Civil War that "modernized" (for its time) Washington, D.C. This
resulted in the burial of one whole block of lots, with houses occupied
mostly by immigrants (just the lower potions remained), much like what
happened at the African Burial Ground but not nearly as deeply buried. If
interested, I can send you the report. We also did a very small project that
revealed how expanding real estate development in early 20th century
Northwest destroyed a mixed community of black and white residents that had
grown up after the Civil War around one of the Civil War Circle Forts in
then rural DC. I can send the DC report as well if of interest. A similar
event occurred in Alexandria near one of their Circle Forts although we have
not worked there.

Subject: urban material again
Hi all,
About 3 years ago I wrote on behalf of Diana Wall and myself to ask
for reports, information, etc on urban projects for a book we are
doing on archaeological contributions to understanding American
cities. I am happy to say that we got a lot of useful material. We
have been working on this (not exactly at the speed of light) but
would now like to ask if any of you have done, or know of, urban
projects since 2007?
thanks in advance for your help

Nan,
I have not been involved in urban projects per se since 2007.
However, since I do not believe I responded to your original request, let me
know if you are
interested in sites associated with a 19th century (Civil War-period)
druggist and late 19th
century tannery in Pittsburgh.
Thanks,

Hi Ben
Thanks for writing. Does any of the material you mention relate to
gender, class, ethnicity/race, urbanization (settlement, expansion,
planning) or urban infrastructure? Those are the topics we're
particularly interested in.

Nan,
Let me know if you need an indexer for the book.

Are you only interested in American cities or are you interested in
comparing them to cities in places like Australia.
I have just completed a book for the Global Contributions to Historical
Archaeology series so I was faced with the problem of what to compare my
site too. I found not only was the Cypress Project database online - I would
think you would know about that one, but Australians have also put a
database from big urban digs on-line. It's called the Archaeology of the
Modern City Project and it's at http://www.latrobe.edu.au/amc/

Thank you for this, I'll definitely check it out. We would like to do
some comparisons and Australia seems the obvious place but the
publisher wants a short book and tight focus. We may try to sneak in
some comparisons tho.
