David,

The field school portion of the Popham dig ended in 2005. The Abbe
Museum field school is prehistoric. There is usually a field school run
through the Damariscotta River Association (in Newcastle) that works on
historic sites. Field schools may also be held at Fort Knox through
Friends of Fort Knox and in the Lewiston area through the U. of Southern
Maine. This office usually does two or three projects a year that are
open to the public, but are not field schools as such. This past season
I worked on 17th c. sites at Pemaquid, Cape Elizabeth and Woolwich which
were more or less open to the public. Also, the Maine Archaeological
Society has a program whereby they hook up volunteers with projects.
But for most of the above possibilities it is far too early to know what
will be available next season. I would check in with this office or one
of the groups listed above in the early spring to see what is happening.

David,

I don't think that the Popham excavation is still open, though you would
definitely enjoy the book- "Fort St. George: Archaeological excavations
of the 1607-1608 Popham Colony" by Brain. If you are in the Bucksport,
Maine area, I know they have been excavating at Fort Knox, but I don't
know what future plans are like. Also, the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor
runs a week-long archaeology field school every summer. The research is
often prehistoric, but the historic/perhistoric border is permeable.

I am in the early stages of planning an excavation for summer 2011, but
the details have not been ironed out yet.

for information. I am 80, well, in a month or so. I heard an explanation
of History the other day which I will pass on. The question was; "Why
study History?". The answer given was: "The study of History is who we
are and where we came from!" I never thought of it that way. Now I wish
I had paid more attention in class for it seems I really missed out on a
lot of fun.

projects in Maine or New Hampshire during the Spring , Summer or Fall of
2010? I visited relatives in Acton, N.H. this summer and nosed around
some really good historical parts. Haven't been able to find site info
concerning the area. I am thinking of rounding up my survey gear and
going back in 2010.
