Oval / lenticular cross-sections appear on pipes throughout the 19th 
century, and probably earlier.  Sometimes they are generally circular stems 
and get flattened towards the mouth.  From memory they tend to be second 
half of the 19th century, but that is based on Australian assemblages which 
themeselves may be biased in their selection of material, which is dominated 
by the main Scottish manufacturers.
