“Loudly Bellows the Wave of the Sea Against the Land”: The Archaeological
Evidence of Hurricane/Cyclone and Tsunami Impacts to Coastal Communities

The human landscape of coastal communities is often at the mercy of the
seas. Hurricanes and cyclones are powerful forces that can obliterate a
landscape through tidal surges, damaging winds, and flooding rains. Through
the centuries, around the globe, residents of coastal communities have had to
choose whether to abandon or rebuild following a storm event. Tsunamis,
while not connected to tropical weather patterns, are also capable of altering
the human-modified landscape of the coast. This symposium will examine the
archaeological evidence of the seas’ power to influence community behaviors
in the wake of natural disaster.
