Proposed Video Forum
Seeing Public Archaeology

A major goal of public archaeology is the dissemination of 
information to the various publics who have a vested interest in 
archaeological practice and interpretations. For many years 
archaeologists have bemoaned the fact that little effort is expended 
in teaching the public about what we do and what we have learned. 
Although we have been hesitant to popularize the results of our 
research, archaeology shows on cable TV are attracting large 
audiences. Videography is clearly a publicly accessible medium that 
will play an increasingly important role if we choose to share our 
archaeological findings with the public.

The proposed video forum, Seeing Public Archaeology, is an 
opportunity to preview recent video productions that showcase proper 
archaeological techniques, promote the conservation ethic, and/or 
examine the ways in which archaeology can contribute to the 
identification and celebration of cultural heritage.

The proposed forum will include 3-5 videos (15-30 minutes in length) 
to be shown in conjunction with Making the Past Come Alive: Public 
Archaeology at Fort St. Joseph for presentation at the annual 
conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology, Jacksonville, 
FL, January 2010. The showings will be followed by formal comments by 
a discussant and an open forum for audience participation. For
