The Fiske Center for Archaeological Research at UMass Boston is searching
for a Project Archaeologist to help support our regional archaeology
program. The Fiske Center is an endowed research unit focused on
interdisciplinary archaeological research and applied public archaeology
projects, with a particular specialty in historical and environmental
archaeology. The Centeršs research helps support a Masteršs program in
Historical Archaeology.
 
Description:
The Project Archaeologist will engage in archaeological fieldwork,
laboratory work, report writing, and related tasks in support of the Fiske
Centeršs archaeological research program. S/he will serve as the Project
Director for small regional public archaeology projects, supervising site
excavation, processing and cataloguing artifacts, and preparing technical
reports for sponsors. The Project Archaeologist will also help support the
work with other Fiske Center staff, assisting with the development of
proposals, analyzing a variety of field data, working on collections
analysis and management, and supervising student research assistants. Some
travel will be required in conjunction with archaeological field projects,
especially during the summer.
 
Qualifications:
- Minimum Masteršs degree in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related
field, with three years of experience working on archaeological and/or
artifact-based projects.
- Historical sites experience, preferably in the Northeast.
-Self-motivated, able to work independently, and also work well as part of a
team.
- Ability to generate time and budget estimates for projects, supervise and
direct field projects involving undergraduate and graduate students, and
demonstrated ability to complete archaeological reports for outside
sponsors.
- Laboratory skills in cleaning, cataloging and identification of artifacts,
with specific knowledge of historical material culture.
- Ability to supervise basic archaeological laboratory work of students.
- Strong organizational and computer skills required, with GIS and/or
database proficiency a plus.
- Familiarity with State Historic Preservation Office permitting
requirements in Northeast preferred.
- Grant and proposal writing experience a plus.
- Collection management experience a plus.
