Hi all, I need to replace a couple of last minute dropouts:
Help Wanted
Fort Johnson Fieldwork
November 13 - December 8, 2007
Full Time or Part Time Field Technicians
Fort Johnson is on James Island, in Charleston, SC. It was first fortified
in 1708, and served a joint military / public health role until the end of the
Civil War. It continued to serve as a Quarantine station until the mid 20th
century. It was given to the state in the 1950s and since then it has been a
research and educational facility with participation by the College of
Charleston, Medical University of SC, the state Department of Natural Resources,
NOAA and others.
A new lab and classroom facility is being built in a moderately sensitive
area. We'll be excavating the interior of two cisterns, exploring a midden
deposit dating to the War of 1812 era, monitoring the removal of a modern storage
building and documenting underlying features from a 1934 building, and
stripping fill from the building footprint and excavating any underlying features
such as wells and privies.
Fieldwork will be conducted on a Tuesday to Saturday schedule to allow
student and public participation. Qualified field techs, and trainees are
encouraged to apply. Part time positions are available for students. Volunteers are
welcome.
