While farmers, like Lyle Browning's family, could raise a hundred
chickens a year, the rest of the country did not have access to as
much poultry until the likes of Tyson and Perdue got rolling. It was
not until the "industrialization" of chicken farming in the US that
chicken became cheap enough for everyone to have it fairly
frequently. Just look at the cost of chicken in Europe in comparison.
When during the 1928 presidential campaign the Republican Party, Not
Pres Hoover as is often claimed, spoke of "a chicken in every pot"
that was pretty significant.
