I offered a reconstructed Asian bowl with a chipped and ground notch
recovered from a Chinese trash pit at a fishing camp adjacent to the Ballast Point
whaling station (CA-SDI-12,953). I believe the Chinese cook for the whalers
moonlighted in Western medicine by adapting the traditional shallow bowl for
bloodletting. The resultant shape with the notch closely resembles bloodletting
bowls made for the practice.
