Wearing smooth soled shoes in the desert could get a person killed. Most of
my desert work involved crumbly granite boulders in soft soil slopes that
require Vibram soles to prevent slippage and nasty tumbles. Believe me, no one
would want to pack me out of the wilderness. Maybe the dig kit should include
an additional pair of flat shoes for digging?

Back to Las Pilitas Rockshelter in Baja California in 1969, there is at
least one lurker who has not introduced himself and who was covered with the
"coal dust" black sediment that I mentioned yesterday. He will recall that sweat
cut through the black making us look like zebras with vertical stripes. The
sad thing is that at least two of our old field crew have passed on to the
great dig pit in the sky.
