Which reminds me...
The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (www.iris.edu) has a
great website full of educational activities, and they also have a grant
program and information links for AS-1 seismometers. These are robust but
sensitive instruments. We have had one on the exhibit floor for 2.5 years
without any serious maintenance issues. Ours is just sitting inside a
plastic box on a wooden pedestal on top of the resilient flooring, but it
records M 6.5 and greater quakes from all over the world as well as lots of
visitor quakes. You can see the current recording at

IRIS also has a moderated listserve for anyone doing earthquake education,
available at their website.
