Wayne,
I am working at Old Cahawba in Dallas County, at the confluence of the
Alabama and Cahaba Rivers. (once one of the biggest cotton shipping points
on the river and home to some people that owned a line of ocean going
sidewheelers. I don't know anything about steering systems, but do have
some information on an inventor that lived here that developed a double
boiler system for steamboats. (he also ran a mill and factory powered by
steam at Old Cahawba). If this might be of any help, please drop me a line
off list. Thanks.
P.S. there were a number of boats with ties to Cahawba, so if you can tell
me the boat's name or the location of the wreck or the captain, I can check
my research files and I MIGHT have some additional information to share with
you. Worth a try anyway.

Subject: Steering systems on eastern coastal paddlewheel steamboats
I am currently writing my thesis on an eastern coastal paddlewheel steamboat
sunk in an Alabama river. I have been very fortunate in gathering a good
amount of material concerning the construction and engineering of this type
of vessel; however, I could use some input on the unique steering system
that was installed on these steamboats. Any ideas or references would be
appreciated.
