Director of Historic Sites
The Texas Historical Commission, a nationally recognized organization
dedicated to the state’s historic preservation and the cultural education of
its citizens, has a new opening for a Division Director to oversee the
transfer and stewardship of 20+ historic sites newly transferred to the
agency in recent state legislation. The properties include museums, and
archeological and military sites. This is a career-defining, ground floor
opportunity to be involved in a dynamic program from inception through
ongoing management of the properties.
The position will report directly to the Executive Director of the agency
and be initially responsible for the successful transfer of the properties
to the Texas Historical Commission, including budget administration to
oversee the immediate deferred maintenance program recently funded by the
legislature as part of the transfer agreement.
Ongoing responsibilities will include:
§ Strategic planning and policy and procedural development for the
management of the sites.
§ Managing 90+ professional and support staff across the state.
§ Budget planning and preparation of the annual financial and work
plans for Historic Sites Division.
§ Working collaboratively with the Executive Director and Commission
in the advocacy of the historic sites and the successful integration into
the state’s heritage tourism efforts.
§ Working collaboratively with the Marketing Communications Division
to develop innovative strategies to increase historic site visitation and
awareness.
§ Providing leadership to community, private and philanthropic
organizations interested in historic sites and preservation.
§ Ensuring communications between central office and individual sites
to achieve excellence and consistency in the execution of cultural resource
management standards and policies.
Position Requirements:
Master’s degree (strong preference) in historic preservation, public or
business administration or closely related field. Minimum 10 years
progressive experience in related field, to include knowledge and experience
in the management and stewardship of an extensive portfolio of diverse
historic and recreational sites. Proven track record as a leader in a
dynamic and complex organization. Position requires strong oral and written
communications.
Salary commensurate with experience; position posted at mid $70-80,000.
