 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT -- ASSISTANT ARCHAEOLOGIST 

Mount Vernon is seeking applications for the position of ASSISTANT
ARCHAEOLOGIST.  This full time, permanent position manages the daily
operation of Mount Vernon's permanent archaeological program, designed
to study the plantation home of George and Martha Washington.

The Assistant Archaeologist's primary duty is to conduct and supervise
archaeological excavations.  The Assistant also works closely with the
Director of Archaeology in all phases of archaeological planning and
reporting.  Other responsibilities include artifact processing, analysis
of archaeological materials, public interpretation, staff development
and assisting in the preparation of archaeological reports and exhibits.


Archaeology at Mount Vernon is a public program and the Assistant
Archaeologist coordinates archaeological internships, the volunteer
program and oversees public interpretation during excavations.  The
Assistant Archaeologist also contributes to the Mount Vernon website and
publicizes archaeological research through presentations, papers and
published articles.

A graduate degree in anthropology, historic preservation, history, or
closely related field is preferred.  A B.A. or B.S. degree and graduate
coursework is required.  The successful applicant will have intensive
excavation experience including excavation of historic Colonial period
sites and worked in a supervisory capacity for one year.  Also required
is the demonstrated ability to process and analyze eighteenth-century
material culture, research interests in historical archaeology of the
Chesapeake region, and experience writing for a variety of audiences.
