Carol,
If you go to the SHA website (www.sha.org) and type in "shoes" in the
search box on the bottom right of the page, you will get access to more
than 20 papers in Historical Archaeology that relate to shoes.  I seem to
recall their have been several good papers on the topic over the last 10 or
20 years.
