One technique I have seen is to set the interview in the home or work place
of the individual and then bring a similar kind of artifact the person would
have had in their life experience. The interviewer holds the item casually and
eventually asks the person if this item is similar to ones they used? This
usually evokes lots of memories, especially if they examine it closely and
spark some memories that might not come out otherwise. Another technique is to
pass them photos and ask questions around the image. This is less intimidating
that a tape recorder and a notepad.
