The reportage this morning was that 'it isn't as bad as it looks' 
because the Cutty Sark is/was currently undergoing a programme of 
restoration and conservation.  This means that masts, rigging, and all 
artefacts were being stored off-site.  From the pictures, it seems that 
the centre of the ship took most of the damage: prow and stern sections 
seem less damaged (I can't say 'untouched').

There have been one or two reports that the fire was caused by arsonists 
(deliberate fire setting, or accidental fire setting as part of illegal 
entry), but it has also been noted that historic structures are much 
more likely to burn when undergoing restoration.
