Virgin Megastore on Union Square (14th St/Broadway) has a decent
classical music selection.  There's also the Virgin Megastore in Times
Square - but I tend to avoid that area like the plague because of the
sheer mass of people constantly there.  That said, you can't come to
New York and not go see the Naked Cowboy.  He's usually in that area,
and he'll even let you be taken in photo with him!

More seriously...

For sheet music:

Patelson's (right behind Carnegie Hall on 7th Ave/56th St) has a very

good selection of all types of sheet music.  Another good bet is
the Juilliard Book Store (esp for piano music).  However, because
of the construction at Lincoln Center (and the fact that the bookstore
was physically ripped from the building and the place looks like it
was hit by an earthquake) they are currently located in a bright blue
port-an-office on 66th street between Broadway and Amsterdam.  They also
have a good collection of CDs and sundry Juilliard memorabilia - you
simply can't go back to Australia without a Juilliard pencil now can
you!

Unfortunately, Tower Records, which used to sit right behind Lincoln
Center, was closed down several months ago.  They had a large classical
room... The place is still empty and up for rent if you're interested!

As for what's going on musically ...  'tis really not the season yet,
though I'm certain there are various chamber recitals here and there
that would be worthwhile checking out.  You're best bet is to pick up
copies of New York Magazine, Time Out, or the Village Voice, which between
them will be able to inform you of most everything that's going on.

You missed the New York Philharmonic's Concerts in the Parks by about
a month, but truth be told, though the concept is wonderful, the NY
Phil is a terrible orchestra and you really didn't miss much at all.
