Obviously there was a confusion between the great Carl Nielsen and Ludolf
Nielsen (1876-1939).  If you try Ludolf expecting another Carl, you will
probably be disappointed.  But in his own terms, Ludolf Nielsen is a very
fine composer, Romantic in a relatively traditional sense, but with a
delicate influence of popular fiddle playing.  His 2d symphony is not
spectacular, but deserves its nickname of "Symphony of Joy", and careful
listening reveals a beautifully wrought and subtly felt piece throughout.
He had nothing revolutionary to say, but what he said certainly came from
genuine inner necessity.  On the same CPO CD Donald (I think) was referring
to, the Lyric Nocturne is a real jewel, full of elliptic and penetrating
summer poetry.

Once again, if you only seek sheer novelty, this is not for you.
Otherwise, it is very fine music.
