Look in a dictionary under ampoule, ampule, or ampul.  Often found in 
large commercial first-aid kits containing (as probably in this case) 
antiseptic such as iodine, Merthiolate, or Mercurochrome.  Originally 
covered in fiber and net cloth to prevent glass getting into the 
wound after being crushed and also to make a dauber.  If a clear 
liquid it probably contained ammonia to serve as "smelling salts" or 
alcohol.  The Mine Safety Company produced most of these.  The 
Christmas tree bubblers were flat on one end so that the light bulb 
would heat the tube better.
