There was a movie a few years back titled "Remains of the Day" in which a
butler (Anthony Hopkins) drove across England in a vain attempt to re-hire a
former servant he liked very much. He drove the manor car and stopped in a small
tavern for the night, only to be mistaken by the proprietor as "a gentleman"
and quietly corrected. I found the whole exchange baffling, but figure the
term was intended for the upper class of England.
