The blocks of acrylic or some sort of two part epoxy has worked great. It sometimes takes a little practice to get the casting down, but you get a very good view of the skulls with none of the anxiety of breaking them.

Jamie,
For the small bird skulls is having them encased in a block of cast acrylic
an option?
You wouldn't be able to feel the skull but you can get a good look at it
from all sides and it would be very durable.
