I'm doing a lot of that research right now, Christine, in support of a book
I'm writing called "Autism Out of the Box." A few folks who are involved
in one way or another:
Kit Wilhite at Science Museum of Minnesota
Jacquie Genovese at The Academy of Natural Sciences (PA)
Discovery Museum (Cherry Hill NJ)
Discovery Aquarium (Foundation) in Camden NJ
Brookville Zoo in Naperville IL
Children's Museum in Naperville IL
Lake Champlain Maritime Museum
Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC)
As you learn more, please let me know - this is an area of great interest
to me, and I'm hoping to take an active role in increasing
funding/awareness/research/cool programs!

Dear Colleagues,
An Inquiry Group working under the auspices of the Center for
Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) is looking to catalog
efforts that make informal science education experiences more inclusive
of people with disabilities. Founded in 2008 with support from the
National Science Foundation (NSF), CAISE works across the informal
science education (ISE) field to gather and communicate evidence of the
contributions of informal science education and to offer professional
development opportunities for those working with and seeking NSF support.
If you or your institution has been working to increase access to
science education for people with disabilities through informal
learning, please email Christine Reich ([log in to unmask]). We're
interested in learning more about what the project/initiative is, the
target audience, specific attributes of the design of the learning
experience(s) that make it inclusive for people with disabilities,
whether individuals with disabilities are involved in decision-making
about the project/initiative, and if you conducted an evaluation of your
program/exhibit/initiative. We'd also be interested in learning more
about lessons you or your institution have learned over time, and about
any challenges you face as you try to develop inclusive learning
experiences.
Please also forward this email to anyone else you know who has been
working to increase access to informal science learning for people with
disabilities.
Thank you to all who have already provided this inquiry group with
information (particularly those who completed our survey this past
winter) and those of you who plan to provide us with information in the
near future.
Sincerely,
Christine Reich, Museum of Science, Boston
Ellen Rubin, New York
Jeremy Price, Boston College
Mary Ann Steiner, University of Pittsburgh
