Compressors are loud and big ones get hot. Having it located remotely makes for a better experience. Even in a shop it is always nicer if the compressor is in it's own ventilated and sound-proofed closet.
If I was designing up a brand new science center/museum and money was not (yet, ha, ha) and issue I would at least try and have a feed to a gallery or two. Plan for at least the sound-proofed ventilated closet with dedicated 220 circuit and the copper lines to the gallery. The cost of doing that during building construction would be minimal. Then the big-ol-honkin' compressor can come later as well as the lines to exhibits that need air.
