The calculations for how much milk a baby needs according to weight are
accurate for about the first 4-6 weeks, after which a breastfed baby
reaches peak intake, which for girls is about 23-26 oz per day and boys
is 28-40 oz per day.
Those are wide ranges, as Nina already observed, and I have personally
seen some babies thrive on much less (one 3-4 month old female baby with
a mild cardiac malformation was growing on about 13 oz of expressed
breast milk per day (mom was exclusively pumping).
Another useful calculation I read (but cannot tell you where) is that an
underweight baby needs twice the weight of milk per day as he or she
needs to gain per week. So if the weight gain shortfall is 100 g (approx
3 oz) per week, she would need 200 g (approx 6 oz) per day extra milk.
This has worked well in my practice, to avoid over-supplementing babies
who just need a little more milk to thrive.
