And its my turn to be agreeable: exhibits need variety. Some objects, some
text, some photos, some interactive and some trans-active or open-ended. The
problem has been that in recent years the mix has been distorted out of
whack with the self-righteous fervor of interactivity. The world needs a
better balance.

True.
Perhaps I reacted a bit hastily, but there seems to be this general feeling
that an open-ended exhibit will solve all problems. But it won't. I have
always been a proponent of open-ended exhibits, but close-ended exhibits
aren't necessarily bad. Some "traditional" style learners will actually
avoid exhibits that appear open-ended. So, let's not dismiss people's
attempts to create exhibits that meet different criteria. Howard Gardner's
multiple intelligence theory could indeed be transformed into a rubric for
creating exhibits - close-ended and open-ended.

Ed didn't say it would cover all of the multiple intelligences - just
that it would be "multi" - there is a subtle difference.

Ed,
I respectfully disagree. Does an open-ended experience necessarily
encourage the development of musical intelligence as well as
logistical-mathematical intelligence? I don't think so. The more an
experience is facilitated the more likely one can approach this, but the
idea that creating an open-ended experience automatically engages all
types
of intelligence is a bit simplistic.
Or ofr a concrete example: I have yet to see anyone develop their
musical
intelligence by utilizing a paper airplane exhibit. I'm not saying it
can't
ever happen (someone could develop a song about airplanes), but I am
saying
the airplane exhibit is not effective at encouraging it.

Mike-
Making the exhibit experience open-ended ensures that it will be
multi-intelligence. Give people a challenge and let them solve it in
their
own thinking style - some will talk, some will draw, some with pick up
the
materials provided and build. Perfect.
