keep up with it. Anita. I get GREAT STUFF out of this
forum. The debate on Historical archaeology has been a
constant topic since the genesis of the discipline. And
remember scientific archaeology is NEW and we are still in
growing mode, replete with all of its problems and opinions
(and as you say, as a free forum it surely has opinions).
When I was an undergraduate I never heard of this
discipline, even when I worked for the RBS on the Upper
Missouri in the early sixties. The first time I heard Deetz
speak he was discoursing about Arikara ceramics! In my
lifetime I have watched it grow tremendously along with a
lot of other subsets of material culture; industrial
archaeology, vernacular architecture, even "commercial"
archaeology.I think archaeology can withstand being hydra-
headed as long as we dont lop off the heads. The Fontana
post will be used in my classes; indeed much of this
material has great merit.Im a lurker here I guess but I
benefit from these discussions although I know it can be
frustrating for you. I deeply appreciate your energy and
commitment. thanks, dg orr
