Last year, Ausarch, the Australian-based email list set up by Peter
Hiscock at UNE, was discontinued. It was a valuable communication tool
for archaeologists, heritage professionals and people with a general
interest in Australian archaeology. I understand that it had about 1300
subscribers, including many overseas. There had been a number of
proposals to revive it in some form but nothing had eventuated.

I have therefore established a new list-serve via Google Groups which I
call OzArch, in reverence to the old list.

OzArch, is a moderated email list for people interested in prehistoric
and historical archaeology in Australia. The list is moderated at a low
level of scrutiny but posts and membership are confined to bona fide
archaeological professionals, academics, students and interested
amateurs. This is a forum for sharing information and ideas on
archaeological practice, theories, methods and stories. It has been set
up by Gary Vines, a consultant archaeologist and historian working in
Melbourne, Australia.

Membership is open to anyone with a bona fide interest in Australian
Archaeology. Members need to identify themselves, with their full names
and some idea of who they are or where they are from.

Google groups allows posts to be viewed via the Web, as well as email
options. It also allows archiving of posts, and creation of other
information pages and files. However, access to these, requires you
first to create an account and sign before you can join the group. You
can do this via the Google Groups page http://groups.google.com.au/
<http://groups.google.com.au/> You can also create a profile to let
other people know about you.

Membership of OzArch is via an invitation, which can be requested at
http://groups.google.com.au/group/ozarch?hl=en-GB
<http://groups.google.com.au/group/ozarch?hl=en-GB> or directly to the
group manager [log in to unmask]
