Have you tested the soil and bricks for acid, ph, or chemicals that might  
provide an answer to the function? 
 
I seem to recall seeing a World War II U.S. Army privy at Camp Callan, San  
Diego, California that had brick receptacles under the (by the 1960s)  
dilapidated latrine building.
