this was originally one of those fairly benign factory towns, set up back in
the 1850s or so, with all the latest conveniences; but they got hit really
bad by german (re)unification; good to see they seem to be getting back on
their feet...

they claimed the red glass as their claim-to-fame (before they produced
almost all of east germany's light bulbs): it was exhibited at the "crystal
palace" expo in london, won all kinds of awards, etc.
so maybe it's some particular shade of red, i don't know...
