There are at least two recordings of Mattheson's music that have been
available recently. The Kontrapunkt release is definitely still available
(at least it's listed at a couple of on-line mail order places I checked).
The Trevak release may not be currently available in the US. The Trevak
label was distributed in the US by Allegro Imports, but they now seem to be
without a distributor here. Trevak is a label based in the Czech Republic,
and specializes in music by little-known, late-Baroque/early-Classical
composers (such as Zimmermann, Sperger, Romberg, and Mattheson). They
were never easy to find, but a little persistence may pay off. Here's
the recording info:
12 Sonatas "Der Brauchbare Virtuoso" (1717)
Toke Lund Christiansen, Transverse Flute
Jesper Bode Christensen, Harpsichord
Kontrapunkt 32060/61 1990 1:47:10
24 Fugues
Suite (1735)
Vladimir Ruso, Harpsichord
Trevak TREC4-0001 1991 1:04:20
Dates are for general release (not necessarily US release). In general,
my impression after hearing these works is that Mattheson was a talented
craftsman, but there's little true inspiration evident.
