For the Argerich/Rabinovitch, the label is Teldec, and the recording
is clear and full, and the performances are of demonstration class.
These are two of my favorite duetists, and I wish they would perform more.
Their Mozart duet recording from the same time period received a much wider
range of responses - from condemning to exultatory. I would describe their
Mozart as Mozart for beef eaters, not vegetarians. It isn't porcelain
pretty, delicate, ladies in waiting Mozart. It is full ranging and
exciting, melting at times and not very classical in the emotional
approach. I of course didn't take offense, but many did. Another
recording of theirs to look into is an amazing transcription of Dukas'
Sorcerer's Apprentice (Rabinovitch). Really some of the most phenomenal
piano writing I have heard. At the climax, the music makes you feel like
you are swirling in a wicked whirlpool, as it spins about your head. An
affect I have never experienced from music before. It is with Strauss's
(Richard) Domestic Symphony, and Ravel's La Valse. All three recordings
are on Teldec, and I am sure I saw the Dukas/Strauss/Ravel on Berkshire.
