I have a copy of Martha Gilliam's 1997 paper. It is a fascinating piece of
work. The honey bee colony is a miracle of complexity and it certainly is
plausible that the dumping of chemicals into the nest would have a very
deleterious effect. I thank Dean for bringing it to our attention.
It is also quite certain that the presence of pathogenic organisms such as
varroa, nosema, AFB and the rest have a devastating impact, which frequently
results in the death of the colony. So which is worse, the cure or the
disease? That is always what it boils down to.
