Bill, I saw a nice implementation of this concept at IDEO's website a 
few days ago. Their purpose was to create a custom PDF about the 
company based on the person's interests, but it's the same sort of 
experience and worked well on a few different levels.

Visually, you can see the full range of available components in the 
middle. Along the left, there are a few simple questions that 
auto-select a range of choices based on selections. And, clicking on 
any of the images in the middle gives you a preview of that 
particular selection over on the right where you also have a checkbox 
to manually add / delete that content from the final PDF.

I liked that it worked across a wide range of engagement -- the left 
menu choices lets you make broad brush strokes of interest but you 
also had individual granular control over any of the elements on the 
right.
