Yes I can agree it is a thought provoking article but . . .Where does
it lead us? Can we identify any root causes that may lead to a
reversal of this unfortunate trend? Have we (scientists and science
centers) have a role to play in this or is it a problem of greater
Society?
One aspect of our society that maybe playing a role is the extreme
polarization of discourse with no consideration of facts or due
process; from the halls of our legislatures, op-ed pages, news
broadcasts (eg); everyone has an opinion most often shaped by lack of
specific information about or knowledge of the subject and the
absolute certainty of correctness and the absolute wrongness of the
other person. This has to have an effect on everything from the
subject of the article to halitosis.
