Hi Tom,
There are many similar "sound effect" or "Foley Arts" type exhibits
in both science and children's museums, so while I'm sorry the mom
feels her kids were "scared" I think the exhibit you described is
well within the norm. I wonder what her kids think of the pitch
black Tactile Dome or the decaying animal exhibit at The Exploratorium?
I've worked on several of these types of exhibits and never received
a complaint. (Perhaps people in the New York area are just more
acclimated to the sound of gunfire.)
Somehow I think this might be more a function of your particular
audience demographic than a legitimate reason to change the
exhibition audio. Although I hesitate to suggest a warning sign near
the entrance, that might be the easiest way to resolve your
particular issue.
